RankYourBrandBot

Last updated: 30 Sep 2026

RankYourBrandBot is the fetcher behind RankYourBrand. If you have found it in your server logs, this page says what it was doing and how to stop it.

1. What it is

RankYourBrand is an analytics product: our customers track how AI answer engines describe their brand. When a customer enters their own website during setup, we read that site once to work out the brand's name, what it does, and which other companies share the name.

It identifies itself as: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; RankYourBrandBot/1.0; +https://rankyourbrand.ai/bot)

2. What it reads, and when

There are five reasons it may have fetched a page, and they are not all once-only. This section was rewritten on 30 Sep 2026: it used to describe the first one and imply it was the only one.

Brand setup — the home page of a domain a customer typed, and, only when that page carries too little text to identify anyone, one about page tried in the order /about, /about-us, /company, /pages/about-us. It stops at the first one that answers with real content. Once, when they set up.

Your robots.txt — read before any page on your site is fetched, and again when the cached copy goes stale. If it cannot be read at all, nothing else is fetched.

A customer's own pages — when a customer checks whether their site is readable to a crawler that runs no JavaScript, we fetch pages of THEIR domain only: URLs their own sitemap lists, URLs that AI answers cited, and pages they add by hand. Up to fifty per site, and re-checked once a day while they keep them on that screen. This one does come back on a schedule.

Pages an AI answer cited — when a customer asks why an answer recommended someone else, we fetch the pages that answer cited, so the shape of those pages can be compared with theirs. Those pages may belong to anyone, not only to our customer. Cached for seven days, and fetched because a person asked rather than on a schedule.

A site's logo — the icon or logo of a brand a customer tracks, to show beside its name.

In every case it reads the HTML and nothing else: no scripts, no forms, no following of links found in the page, and never anything behind a login. No page is indexed and no page content is republished.

3. How often

At most four requests at once for any one job, and every job is capped. A customer can trigger at most thirty checks of their own site an hour, at most fifty JavaScript comparisons an hour — one sweep of every page they track — and at most a hundred and twenty fetches an hour of pages an answer cited, of which at most fifty may ignore the seven-day cache. The daily re-check of a customer's own pages runs once a day and is bounded by the same fifty-page limit.

Those limits were added on 30 Sep 2026. Before that the permission rules were enforced and the frequency was not, which is half of being a well-behaved fetcher.

If that is still more than your site should carry, the robots.txt rule in section 5 stops it entirely.

4. What it is not

It is not a training crawler. Nothing it reads is used to train a model, and we do not sell or republish page content.

It is not the AI crawlers this product reports on. RankYourBrand tells its customers when GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others visit their sites; those agents belong to their own operators and have nothing to do with us.

5. Blocking it

Add this to your robots.txt and it will stop, on the next request:

User-agent: RankYourBrandBot Disallow: /

That rule is honoured. Until 30 Sep 2026 two of these fetchers matched an older name for this agent, so a robots.txt written exactly as above was not matched and the page was fetched anyway. That was our mistake, it is fixed, and rules written for the older names — answr-pagecheck and answr-robotscheck — are still obeyed.

You can also block the user agent at your edge or CDN. We will not work around either, and no customer can override it.
